Footsteps for Fertility 5K

Dear Family and Friends,

Most of you probably are aware that Nathan and I have been trying to conceive, but may not be aware that this journey has been a three year struggle. We’ve waited, prayed, hoped, taken various medications, and have undergone surgery. We’ve been to two fertility doctors and just this year received a disheartening diagnosis. It would be an understatement to say that this journey has been difficult and disappointing.

This year we’ll be faced with a heart-wrenching decision to end our pursuit in conceiving naturally and begin looking at other options that might be available. Before we go down that path, we will be participating in the Footsteps for Fertility 5k.

It takes place September 25, 2015 at 6pm in Eisenhower Park. We have created a team (Team Nerd Herd ) during the registration process so that our friends and family can participate with us.

It would mean the world to us if everyone would join us that evening to walk or run for the baby we hold in our hearts. With every registration each person will receive one complimentary ticket that may be entered for us to possibly be awarded a fertility grant. The process of awarding the grant is by random selection, but regardless of the outcome having the support of our friends and family is the most important award we could ever receive.

If you are out of town, busy that night, or dislike walking/running for a 5k you can still support us by taking part in the “Sleep-in for Fertility” option. And even though you are not participating in the event you will still receive a registration packet which will include a ticket for the fertility grant.

To support us all you need to do is go to http://footstepsforfertility.org/events and register for the event in Texas, our team name is Team Nerd Herd. If you have any questions please feel free to ask either Nathan or myself.

We love every single one of you and thank you for your prayers and love.

Much love,

Mal and Nathan

Travel and Books

I have always wanted to travel.

I have been to a few places in the US and stepped outside to Puerto Rico and then in the complete opposite direction to Victoria, Canada and Prince Edward Island. I have a whole list of places and sites that my heart and eyes demand to experience.
Someday I will travel to every dream destination and soak up every moment.

Until then I must content myself with my fond memories of other worlds. These worlds are contained in every book I have ever read. My books have been a means of magical transportation since I was a little girl.

As a child I can remember living with orphaned siblings in a boxcar and solving crime with a girl named Nancy. I was friends with twin sisters in Sweet Valley and helped Miss Rumphuis plant lupines all over the countryside. On Rass Island I cried jealous, angry tears with another twin sister while we struggled over our insecurities of adolescent life. I was guided to a strange world by a tiny private detective named Lewis O. Ladybug and later I greedily ate Turkish Delight with a little boy while we rode with the White Witch.

It was a turning point in my life when I traveled to a small village in England to watch a small boy, by the name of David Copperfield, grow up. From then on the classics took me to Pemberley, Barton Cottage, Uppercross, Hartfield, Thornfield Hall, Limmeridge House, The Shire, and Green Gables. I ran with the likes of Lord Henry Wotton, Lady Chatterley, Dr. Jekyll, Mrs. de Winter, Jo March, Sir Percy and Giovanni and Beatrice. I became obsessed with Poe and his morbid, mysterious world. I let Christie take me by the hand and show me how crime was manipulative and evil, but in the end it didn't matter whether you were a French man or an old woman, crime would be solved.

Once I exhausted myself on traveling in the classics I decided it was time for a more modern era. From this point on I went on adventures where I was an amateur bounty hunter from New Jersey, a British beauty who has a major addiction to shopping, and a ruthless heiress who wanted land more than anything in the world. I witnessed the majesty and tragedy of King Henry VIII's court and gently walked through the life of a Geisha. My letter came from Hogwarts and I spent seven amazing years in a magical community. I found out that I was a demi-god and learned to outwit even the most cunning Gods. And lately I've sat in the great hall of Winterfell, grieved when my Khal died and rejoiced when my dragons helped conquer cities.

I may not have travelled to actual physical places, but through my precious book I have travelled to many places that maps and roads cannot carry you to.

I have never understood how people do not like to read. I love it with a passion. Reading is a magical conduit to great and beautiful experiences. You can join the characters in their adventure or you can become the character for an even more emotional experience. In my humble opinion, if you don't like reading then you are most assuredly doing it wrong.

There are cities both known and unknown and far away worlds waiting for you to explore and all you have to do is "take a look...it's in a book..."

Feeling Vibrant

I've been doing a little shopping with some money we got from our tax refund and I noticed a trend this year.

I've been very into black for a long time. Back when I was teaching piano, I wore a lot of black and white and reds. Basic colors that were easy to combine. After I stopped teaching I switched to wearing a lot of t-shirts. Then the last two years I have very slowly branched out to some color. It felt hard at first. I know that sounds very silly, but it felt weird and uncomfortable. Last year I got more comfortable with it and have been trying to stay away from the safety of my basic black-only look. This year has definitely marked a change. And it all started with a pair of yellow heels.

I went into the mall before Valentine's Day looking for a cute top to wear. I wasn't having much luck. And then in the sale area I saw a pair of bright yellow heels. At first I wasn't even going to bother to see what size they were in. Bright yellow heels? Seriously. That did not sound like me. And the moment I thought that I said "Why doesn't that sound like me?! I am a fun, spunky girl! Why shouldn't I have bright yellow heels?" So I checked them out and they were a 1/2 a size too small (a 6 instead of a 6 1/2), but I didn't care and they still fit me.

Very proud and excited over my find, I realized that now I needed something to wear with my new heels.  I found a dress. Now I rarely wear dresses because I never feel like a have an occasion to wear them to, but I thought of one that might happen and decided either way it looked great with the heels and I needed this pretty dress. And yeah, I even twirled around in the dressing room with it on. Haha!

Then slowly this month I have picked up some other tops and and nail polish. All very colorful! When I was showing N, my new finds from yesterdays short shopping trip he said "Wow! All these tops are very vibrant!". I couldn't help, but smile and say "I guess I'm just feeling very vibrant lately.". And I am. Things feel very different for me this year and with all this change it has left me feeling vibrant and my clothing choices are showing that!

Vibrant.
Pulsing or throbbing with energy or activity
Vigorous, lively, and vital
Relatively high on the scale of brightness

It feels really weird that I would use that word for how I am feeling lately. There are days when I don't feel vibrant. I feel dull or ordinary. But for the most part I am feeling vibrant and it feels really awesome.

There is no denying it.  Vibrant. Bright heels and all. :-)

What to write about...?

I've been trying to think about a blog post lately... I sat down last week and started writing one out, but my thoughts weren't flowing onto the computer correctly. I knew in my head what I wanted to say, but once my fingers started to type them out it came out jumbled lol. I still want to write that post...maybe I will later. :-)

Anywho, what to write...

How about tattoos? Okay! haha

I have had the major ink itch this year. I didn't get any new tattoos last year and now I'm going through withdrawals... like real bad. Haha! I have all these ideas floating around in my head and I have lots pinned on Pinterest. So far two are set in stone. Another two are getting in the process of being settled on. And I was joking around about one to Nate and he thought it would be freaking awesome so maybe that one will be added too. Hahah. Oh dear. I love tattoos.

They are the expression of my soul. Seriously.  They may mean absolutely nothing to the people in my life, but they mean a lot to me. Each one has a story associated with it. Most of the time I shorten the stories, leave more personal parts out, sometimes I just simplify it to the most basic form, and sometimes I tell the whole story.  Now when I say story... don't think that each one has an incredibly, emotional story. Nope. Some are simple stories. But a story that lets you know me a bit better if you want to take the time to listen closely.

If I had the money I would be covered in ink from neck to toe. I love when I see other people who have tattoos and those who are covered in them. I always want to ask the ones covered to tell me about their "ink journey", but I don't because I'm a shy person around strangers and it would be weird if a stranger asked another stranger that. Maybe not... maybe someday I'll be brave enough to!

I get upset when people judge others with tattoos. I once read a blog post that said that people with tattoos were "rebellious, edgy, and untrustworthy". I got angry at first and then had to laugh. How shallow and sad that someone is too afraid of what they don't understand... if you would just talk to us you would realize that we are perfectly normal people who love life passionately. We take small glimpses of our soul, the good and bad, and display it for the world to see. We risk rude stares, narrow minded comments, and misunderstanding all so we can have a constant reminder of who we are. Now I know that not everyone gets tattoos that mean something to them. I know a lot of people who ended up with stuff because they had a little too much to drink or they were young and "being stupid".  There are plenty of those tattoos regrets. Funny thing is that they still have a story associated with them. And I always enjoy hearing about those... It's still a chance to get to know people better!

I plan on having a bunch of ink on me. And as for the "what happens when you are an old wrinkly grandma?" Well...I'll be a hell of an awesome old wrinkly grandma with my grandkids. And it's not like I'm going to suddenly look like a bulldog when I'm old! Hahah! I will have tattoos when I'm an old lady and will love telling my grandkids about them when they ask "hey grandma, what's that one for?" and I'm going to love listening to their tattoo stories and um yeah, I will be the cool grandma going to get more! Hahaha I can just see myself doing that! ;-P

I think tattoos should be your personal choice. Now I'm all for saying yes when someone asks if they should get one, but I am a firm believer that you should get something that means something to you... something that you want to have on you for the rest of your life. And if you don't like tattoos well that's okay too! Just don't pass judgement on those of us who do.

Anywho, I am hoping this year will bring me some awesome ink. I was planning on going to get two done this week, but I'm going to wait till after Spring Break. Ocean water and sun probably aren't a good mix for a freshly done tattoo. I just like to play on the safe side.

And someday, I'm going to cross something off my bucket list. I'm going to LA and having Kat von D tattoo me. I already have the tattoo picked out. It will probably be expensive as heck, but it will be so worth it. I love that woman. All covered in her tattoos and in her punked out clothes, she seems to show how a tattooed woman can still be a strong, and feminine women. You can disagree with me lol, but that's why this is my personal opinion. I have read some stuff of hers and watched her show and she has such a sweet heart for really listening to people's stories while tattooing. It's pretty awesome to me. I can't wait to enter High Voltage one day and have her do the most awesomest tattoo on my back. And yeah, I'm so getting lots of pictures and hugging her and probably will get teary eyed from all the awesome happening. :-)

Kat von D

Until then I'll keep adding to my "story collection". And if you ever want to know the real stories behind my ink just ask me. I can't guarantee you'll be impressed hahah, but if you listen closely I can guarantee that you will know me a lot better.

Back At School!!

Today was my second day back to school. It's so strange to think that after almost four years I'm back. I always hoped to go back, but my mind realistically speaking thought that probably wouldn't happen. And yet, during the same week that I am about to turn 25, I am back! And all because my husband refused to let me give up on my dream. *insert happy smile*

There is so much different this time around. So much. And that's what makes it even more awesome...

And I am so hungry to learn!

I feel giggly when I think about it all. Don't ask why... it just does. Haha!

I was definitely nervous when I walked through campus to my building, but it all just slowly sunk it. I'm not the awkard, frizzy haired kid with a visible top retainer, no make-up, and roller backpack that would let anyone in a five mile radius know I was coming. I'm not naive and desperate for anything and everything. I'm not wearing stupid hose all day. I'm not in a major I hate. I'm not exhausted, lonely, or angry. I'm not starving myself because at least then I have the skinny body I see on the pretty, skinny girls. I'm not in tears because my teachers have once again reminded me bluntly that I don't have the skill required to be in that major. I'm not sitting in the first row.

I sit close to the front, but in a place where feels comfortable...usually the middle. I'm eating and I love to eat and I bring lunch with me since I'm there during lunch time. I'm alert in classes, happy, eager, and definitely not feeling lonely! I'm studying Psychology (finally!!!). I'm aware of the world around me and my heart is full. I have a plain black backpack with my "Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes" pin (that I got on vacation) smack dab in the middle. Oh! And my hair is super short and has purplish tones in it right now.

And did I mention I'm studying Psychology?! Hahaha I'm so excited!!

I love being back at school. The years have changed me...and have made me ready to grab hold of this new chapter with great passion!

Ding Dong, I Stole Her Shoes!

I've always wanted Dorothy shoes ever since I watched Wizard of Oz as a little girl. Now I have them. Well...I have some that I can't actually wear lol. I've been trying to make my own Halloween decorations ahead of time and I saw a picture over at Pinterest that was a DIY Wicked Witch leg's & ruby slippers. Okay...so I have the patience for some things, but not for all of that so I grabbed an old pair of heels that are too small for me, bought red glitter and starting on my shoes. I'm pretty sure I ingested a crap load of glitter after all this was done!

Sigh. I love them! If I hadn't painted the inside of the shoes black (they were a weird greyish plaid color before) and if the shoes weren't too small then I would totally be wearing these...like everyday. :-) One Halloween decoration is done...now only five hundred more to complete. Haha!

A Little Story...

My whole life I've always written little stories. Some I finished. Most I left unfinished. They range from Edgar Allen Poe inspired stories, hobbit adventures, southern belles, super-villains, etc. One of my cheesy favorites was written back when I graduated from high school. It was during my Adrian Brody crush-a-thon. :-)  I remember reading an interview he gave to some magazine...well...I'm not sure I was reading it as much as I was drooling over his pictures. Haha! And suddenly I had the urge to write... I grabbed a sticky pad and jotted down: "high and delicate cheekbones framing a strong nose and baleful eyes that peer out from under a pale brow with just a trace of mild amusement" Can you tell how in love I was? Hahahaha!

Well today I thought I would share my little story. Don't laugh...haha...okay you can laugh. I admit...I can be quite obsessive! Don't expect anything amazing...I am by no means good at writing!

Mystery Man
"As I was standing on the corner of 5th and Broadway an unnatural mist settled on the surprisingly relaxed paced street of New York. I had nothing to do that night and decided to watch the variety of people passing by my doorsteps. There were socialites, social climbers, reporters, musicians, politicians, junkies and 'women of the night'. There were so many people I could write about, but amazingly I wasn't interested in any of them.

Then when I was about to give up hope and go back inside, I changed my mind. Across the street stood a man by whom I was inspired to write. dressed in an Armani suit with a fedora slouched across one side of his jet black hair. He leaned against a street lamp and lit a cigarette. He had high and delicate cheekbones framing a strong nose and baleful eyes that peer out from under a pale brow with just a trace of mild amusement that danced in those enchanting eyes. For a moment I was lost in time just looking at him, but quickly came back to earth when I noticed him looking at me.

I felt embarrassed and hoped he hadn't noticed how long I was staring at him. A smile played on his face and he winked at me. Then slowly he turned away, climbed into a cab, and drove off into the starry night. I went inside and quickly began to write. Never again would I see a man like him and I probably would never see him again, but his memory would be with me forever. "

Monster Ball

So I've been inspired by Pinterest.com to make these little monsters for fun! I went to Michaels, got some felt and started drawing out some monsters. I suppose I would have a million of these guys if I just pulled out my sewing machine, but I have thoroughly enjoyed hand-sewing them while chilling out to one of my favorite shows. They look so silly and are very easy to make! There isn't a particular reason I'm making them except that I have a ton of fun doing them and I thought it might be a fun idea to make more for Halloween, stick them in a basket with a cute sign saying "Adopt a Monster" and hand them out while I trick or treat with my nieces and nephews. :-)  Dorky...I know, but I thought it would be cute.

Here are my "Monster Ball" creations:

A Very, Fun Day...

The first time N and I got pictures taken was before we got married for our engagement pictures. A sweet friend offered to take the pictures for us and we greatly appreciated it. They came out beautiful, but unfortunately my hubby accidently lost the cd that contained all the pictures before we were able to print off any of them. I was glad I was able to find four of our engagement pictures on her website.

When we got married I had hoped to have more pictures of our wedding, but all I got was an album and nothing else. Our photographers skipped town and didn't tell us and the people who took over just ignored our emails and phone calls. It sucked and there was more disappointment there.

I've always wanted us to go and take some fun and cute pictures, but it just never seemed to work out...until this year. My sister-in-law's best friend takes some pretty awesome photographs and after she did some family pictures for my in-laws I was hoping that she could help us out. So this week we headed downtown and she snapped away while N and I did our goofy, lovey-dovey thing. It was awesome and fun and she captured a lot of amazing moments between us.

In a funny way it kinda felt redemptive to get these pictures...

Universal Studios, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter and more!

We left this past week to head over to Universal Studios for our first vacation since our honeymoon four years ago. Needless to say, it was absolutely wonderful!! I could not have asked for a more perfect vacation than this one. And we are already thinking of where we want to go next year! So awesome!

The Harry Potter area was so breathtaking. I seriously would have just stayed there for the rest of my life! Haha! And the Butterbeer!! Oh Baby Jesus, it was divine! I wish they would sell it outside of the parks because I would live off of it. :-)

We spent the first two days of vacation at Universal Studios and then on Thursday & Friday we spent the time sightseeing and even went to play Mini Golf.

The weather was beautiful all week. The only time it rained was Friday morning and then it stopped and the sun came out shining with force!

Oh...there are so many stories bubbling in my head. I don't even know where to start! So I'll just leave this video of our adventure...

Save a bookcase, buy a book.

Tomorrow Nate & I are going to a used book sale. If you know anything about us then you know that the words "used book sale" make us very happy and excited! It's going to be at the Blossom Athletic Gymnasium. The whole gym is covered with tables (front to back) and on those tables are tons of books. They have every book imaginable! Sigh. It's amazing!

Anywho, I was thinking about all the books we are going to be bring home. And then I started thinking that all the bookcases we have are already filled with books. Which means that we'll need to buy another bookcase. And then I'm going to have to figure out where to put our new bookcase. Upstairs? Downstairs? I'm thinking upstairs because Nate has a bad habit of taking books upstairs and never bringing them back down. So I'm hoping that if there is a bookcase up there than our bathroom and his nightstand won't be overrun by piles of books (and yeah, I said piles.) We love to read.

Someday when we get the chance to build our own home there is definitely going to be a library room. There will be one big window and a window seat. And then every other wall will have built-in bookcases. Floor to almost ceiling bookcases with a sliding ladder (just like in Beauty & the Beast!!). I say almost ceiling because we want molding up there that has famous author's last names going all the way around the room. And in the middle of the room comfy furniture that invites you to curl up and read all day. Oh! And blankets are a must. We even want to spice up the door! We to make the door look like the Tardis. Everytime you walk up to the door to go inside of the library you'll have to open the Tardis doors. The idea that you'll be transported to any world you want is so perfect for us!

The Tardis doors. When we do it, it won't be a cutout. It'll be the legit thing!

Thinking about bookcases makes me think about other people's bookcases. I've seen bookcases filled with books. Old books, new books, famous books, and books I've never heard about. I've also seen bookcases with a mix of books and decorations. But the ones that confuse me the most are the bookcases that don't have any books at all. They usually just have pictures, vases, etc.

Like I said, this confuses me! Why do people use their bookcases for things other than...books?! Haha! Our bookcases are filled with books. Before we moved they were overflowing with books. Since the bookcases were in a different room we didn't care about that, but now that they are in the living room where everyone can see them we thought it might be nice to keep it a little organized. :-)

It makes me sad when I see a bookcase without books. I literally want to go buy some books and sneak them in so the bookcase won't be "lonely". Poor bookcases. There should be a refuge for bookless bookcases.

Save a bookcase, buy a book.

Valentine's Day!

This Valentine's Day was wonderful. *sigh* It started off with me finding little love notes around the house. Each one was a sentence long and each one made my heart feel so romanced. One of them was even a clue about what my presents would be about:

"If I were the Doctor I would take you with me."

I love the tv show Doctor Who. It's about a Time Lord called the Doctor who travels through time & space in his spaceship called the Tardis and usually travels with a companion. It calls to the very geeky side in me and also pulls at the adventure seeking heart strings. There are few shows that I can watch over and over, but Doctor Who is definitely one of those shows. Nate always tells me that he knows which shows mean the most to me if I end up crying while watching it. Yeah, I've cried while watching it. Don't judge! Everyone's heart gets tugged at with different things...mine just happens to be shows filled with adventure and friendship and the impossible.

Anyways when I saw that card tears filled up in my eyes. To have the Doctor ask you to join him is something special and rare. It's hard to describe. I already think of my hubby as the Doctor...and I am his Rose. (You really need to see the show to understand).
okay...tears again...

When my hubby got home he had hoped that my flower delivery would have gotten there, but it hadn't...and then ten mins later we got a call from the delivery guy asking how to get in the complex. Nate went out to just get the flowers and I personally think that it was more romantic to see him standing there holding this awesome arrangement rather than some stranger.

We usually do presents late at night, but we changed it up this year and gave them before we left. I got him the movie he has been dying to see every since the trailer. When we got back home later that night we curled up on the couch and watched Despicable Me. It was hilarious. And both of us want minions. It was my turn after his gift and OMG!!!! He got me a Doctor Who Illustrated Companion book and...wait for it... a Sonic Screwdriver!!!! You will never see the Doctor without one. I'm not going to try to explain in...go google it haha. I just want to say that this was the best freaking Valentines gift ever! I don't need diamonds or chocolates...just give me geeky toys that inspire me to dream and play! :-) Oh lordy...I am such a geek!

After presents we headed over to Tycoon Flats. If you've never been there please go! Their burgers are freaking juicy and unbelievable. And you need to try their Sweet Potato fries. O.M.G. Once we were full we headed over to a frozen yogurt place that we had a gift card to. It was yummy and instead of sitting inside we walked and talked and oohed & awed over our dessert.
It was a very romantic night...and very us... :-) We've had five V-day's together and I'm so looking forward to many, many more... *sigh* I'm a happy girl right now...and yes, I'm sitting here with my Sonic Screwdriver. Don't judge ;-P

Christmas Time!!

It's Christmas time!!

The tree and all the decorations are up...hot chocolate is my daily night-time drink...presents are already under the tree...there are still more presents to be bought...one kitty has already tried to get into her stocking...we've been to "Bethlehem" at Burnet and the Trail of Lights at Marble Falls...the Christmas movies (all VHS btw...well except for one...I'm old school haha) have been pulled out...we've hunted Christmas lights down, but sadly people don't seem too fond of lighting up their houses this year...we have our whole Christmas week planned out...sometime that week we'll be heading to the Riverwalk to freeze our butts off while looking at lights lol...there has been lots of snuggling under blankets...singing to Christmas music in the car...and lots of excitement about Santa coming (okay that last one is all me haha). I love Santa...nuff said.

I love Christmas time!
